Hints for the use of this web site (recommended)

Links on my web site look a bit different to normal; instead of seeing them underlined they look like this. When you mouseover them, they go red- try it!

When you see an audio player such as that shown below, note that you may have to click on it to activate it before pressing the 'Play' button. This seems to be a 'feature' of some versions of the MediaPlayer ActiveX control.

Väinö K. Lehtoranta, OH2LX, died of a serious illness in Heinola, Finland on 16th September 2012.

Born in Helsinki on 28th July 1932, He was one of Europe's leading experts on radio history, propagation and technology and he had a keen interest in radio location systems.

I first started to correspond with Väinö in 2006 as I was building this web site, and I was at once impressed with his friendly nature, expert knowledge and willingness to share the work he had done on Hyperfix in the Baltic Sea and on the Russian MF Positioning systems. Indeed, it is fair to say that without his contribution, much of this web site simply would not exist.

I was however also aware that at the time he was battling cancer and was in great pain much of the time.

It is with great sadness that I learned of his passing, and wish to express my most heartfelt condolences to his family.

I dedicate this web site to the memory of a great and very brave man.
