Chayka Positioning System

Chayka (ЧАЙКА) means 'Seagull' in Russian, and is the name of a positioning system that is very similar to LORAN-C, to the point where receivers are mutually compatible. Chayka operates on 100kHz and is a hyperbolic positioning system using time-of-flight of narrow pulses. Stations are organised in chains, and each station may be identified by its Group Repetition Interval or GRI.

Chayka has been incorporated into the Eurofix system, which may well extend it's service life indefinately.

The recording in this clip was made in the UK and it probably contains a mix of Loran and Chayka transmissions.
